Volksbank Münster Marathon Training Plan & Preparation

The Volksbank Münster Marathon runs from the Schlossplatz to a finish on the Prinzipalmarkt in the heart of the old town. With just 121 metres of total climbing over the full loop, it is a genuinely flat city marathon where even pacing from the first kilometre shapes your result far more than any feature of the terrain.

Course & Elevation

The race starts on the Schlossplatz in front of Münster's palace. The first ten kilometres or so stay within the city before the loop passes the Aasee lake and heads out into the western districts, taking in Gievenbeck, Nienberge and Roxel before turning back towards the old town. The finish line sits on the Prinzipalmarkt, where the organisers roll out a red carpet for the final metres.

The profile is as flat as the Münsterland it crosses: 121 metres of climbing over 42 kilometres, with a good 80 percent of the course dead level and no steep sections anywhere. The only noticeable rise stretches between kilometres 17 and 22, and even there the highest point of the loop sits barely 20 metres above the start. From there the course rolls gently back down and stays level to the line. The entire route is on asphalt.

Organised by runners for runners since 2002, the event lines the course with around 300 bands and performers, and more than 100,000 spectators create a dense wall of noise through the city sections. The marathon is also a qualifying race for the Abbott World Marathon Majors age group world championships, which draws a competitive age-group field. If you are after a fast, even autumn marathon with a big-city atmosphere, Münster delivers exactly that.

Pacing Strategy

On a course that is level for a good 80 percent of its distance, the profile decides nothing and your consistency decides everything. Settle on a target pace beforehand and hold it from the gun, because the terrain never gives you a reason to change rhythm.

The main trap comes in the first ten kilometres: crowds, bands and a dense field through the city centre make it easy to run several seconds per kilometre too fast. On a flat course that surplus compounds unchecked, since no climb ever forces you to slow down and reset.

The gentle rise between kilometres 17 and 22 is the only section with any perceptible gradient. Run it on even effort and accept losing a few seconds; the soft descent that follows hands them straight back.

The race is decided on the flat kilometres from 30 to 40 heading back into the city. If you have been disciplined until then, this is where you hold pace while over-eager starters fade. The level run-in to the Prinzipalmarkt lets you keep an even rhythm all the way to the line.

12-Week Preparation

For most age-group runners the Münster marathon means an effort of roughly 3:30 to 4:30 hours, and that duration, not the profile, is the defining demand of the race.

The effort character is as steadily aerobic as a marathon gets: more than 80 percent of the course is flat, there are no steep sections, and almost nothing forces a change of pace. Anaerobic surges play no role here. What counts is aerobic endurance, running economy and the ability to hold one pace for hours.

The decisive phase starts around kilometre 30, when energy stores run low and the flat course offers no change of rhythm to recover behind. The gentle rise between kilometres 17 and 22 asks for nothing more than keeping your effort constant.

The training emphases follow directly. Long runs of up to 32 to 35 kilometres build the foundation, and several of them should finish fast or include blocks at marathon race pace to practise running on tired legs. Regular steady-state tempo runs at and just below goal pace train exactly the evenness this course rewards. Because the entire route is asphalt, most long sessions should also happen on hard surfaces so tendons and muscles adapt to the impact. Rehearse your fuelling in training as well: on a flat course with no climbs to walk through, gels and drinks have to go down on the run. The single most valuable skill you can bring to Münster is the discipline, built in training, not to exceed a set pace even on a good day.
