Then the snow descents decide: downhill on snow takes courage and short, quick steps; tense braking means more sliding and double the loss. Spikes or trail shoes with an aggressive tread are pacing tools here — with the wrong sole you run the whole race with the handbrake on. Over one to two hours of effort one gel suffices; more important is clothing that works for both the climb and the windy descent.
12-Week Preparation

Preparation rests on two pillars. Second, snow adaptation: if you train in winter, run once or twice a week on snowy paths or winter hiking trails — the stabilisers in foot and hip need weeks to become economical on slippery ground.
