Pacing Strategy
With almost 4,900 metres of vertical over 214 kilometres, this is a mountain race decided by climbing economy. Two ascents form its backbone: the 6.5-kilometre pass from kilometre 65 at nearly nine per cent and 573 metres of gain, and the 5.5-kilometre climb from kilometre 136 that demands another 482 metres — after 136 hard kilometres already. Between them lie short, savage ramps with pitches above 40 per cent at kilometre 97 and 120.
Ride the first big pass well within your limit; overcook it and you lose the race on the second. On the steepest walls, a light gear helps more than force. Because over a third of the route runs downhill, safe descending pays off — that is where you recover actively and gain time.
The biggest trap is an overly ambitious first pass.

What decides the race is how the difficulty is distributed: the two long climbs at kilometers 65 and 136 each demand roughly 500 to 600 meters of climbing, and the second arrives after many hours of riding. Going out too fast in the first half, or letting your fueling slip, costs multiples there. The steep ramps at kilometers 97, 121 and 151 matter too, because on tired legs they can no longer simply be muscled over in the saddle.
Prepare with long rides of five to six hours that place blocks of climbing late in the ride, and consider back-to-back long days to build fatigue resistance. Add low-cadence strength work for the ramps above 20 percent and threshold intervals of 20 to 40 minutes for the long climbs. Rehearse your fueling plan on every long ride; over seven-plus hours, eating and drinking is half the battle. Finally, do not neglect descending, since a good third of the route points downhill, some of it steeply.
