Sauerlandrundfahrt durch Südwestfalen Training Plan & Preparation

The Klassiker of the Sauerlandrundfahrt runs 132 kilometres from Arnsberg up to Winterberg, gathering around 2,650 metres of climbing. Eight significant climbs structure the route, but the finish decides it: after more than 120 kilometres, a long ascent leads to the line. A point-to-point course with a summit finish, rewarding endurance and a coolly rationed finale.

Course & Elevation

The Klassiker runs about 132 kilometres from Arnsberg to Winterberg, tracing the fourth stage across the hill country of Südwestfalen, a landscape of wooded ridges, valleys and half-timbered towns. As a point-to-point route it adds up to roughly 2645 metres of climbing and nets around 640 metres of gain, because the finish sits high above Winterberg.

The difficulty is spread across the whole day rather than concentrated in one pass. The first sustained climb arrives at kilometre 9, just over four kilometres with ramps reaching nearly 20 percent. A rolling middle section follows, broken by short, sometimes steep kickers around kilometres 49 and 59 where the gradient hits double figures. Barely a fifth of the route is flat; the rest is a steady rhythm of up and down.

The final third decides it. After kilometre 100 the profile tilts upward in earnest, and the closing climb from kilometre 124 packs almost 200 vertical metres into three and a half kilometres, with ramps over 15 percent, before the line at around 840 metres. Whoever still has legs here rides at the front. The Klassiker is the long endurance test of the day, made for riders who want a full race day finishing on a summit.

Pacing Strategy

On a 132-kilometre course with 2,650 metres of climbing you don't win the race in the first half, but you can lose it there. The early category-3 climb from kilometre 9 (up to 19 percent) and the equally long one at kilometre 35 tempt attacks in an amateur field – ride them controlled in the endurance-to-tempo range and stay out of overcooked group surges.

The short steep ramp at kilometre 59 (averaging nine percent) costs matches but isn't the decision. That comes on the final climb from kilometre 123: 3.7 kilometres at a good five percent with pitches to 15, up to Winterberg on nearly 130 kilometres of legs. Eat and drink consistently over the whole distance so you don't run out of carbohydrate for this finale. On the many descents – the route climbs net but sheds over 2,000 metres downhill – recover actively and keep pedalling lightly.

12-Week Preparation

As an age-group rider, expect roughly four and a half to six hours in the saddle. Across that time you cover 2645 metres of climbing spread over eight significant ascents and plenty of rolling terrain in between. The effort is mostly aerobic and steady, punctuated by short, steep kickers that briefly tip into the anaerobic range. A robust aerobic base is the foundation, alongside the ability to power up ramps near 20 percent out of the saddle without emptying the tank.

The final third is decisive. The long closing climb from kilometre 124 arrives once more than 2000 vertical metres already sit in your legs. Train climbing under fatigue on purpose: tack a hard ascent onto the end of your long endurance rides so you can produce pace on a climb despite pre-fatigue.

Priorities for this course: long sessions of four hours and up taking in several climbs, targeted muscular endurance work on climbs at low cadence, and short all-out intervals for the steep kickers in the middle. Rehearse your pacing over the early ascents so you do not blow up too soon. Since around a third of the route runs downhill, it pays to train descending and line choice so you can roll safely between climbs without losing momentum.

Climb categories follow the road-cycling convention and rate the terrain itself — length and gradient — regardless of sport: Cat. 4 marks the easiest rated climbs, Cat. 1 the hardest, and HC (hors catégorie, “beyond categorization”) is reserved for the most brutal ascents. Short climbs below the Cat. 4 threshold stay unrated.
