Trumer Triathlon Training Plan & Preparation
The Trumer Triathlon over the Olympic distance is a race of the Salzburg Lake District: 1.5 kilometres in the Obertrumer See, 41.8 rolling bike kilometres and a closing 10K around the Trumer lakes. Its character lies in the constant up and down — with around 900 metres of climbing across bike and run combined, this is no flat rolling course but one that demands rhythm work the whole way.
Course & Elevation
The swim covers 1.5 kilometres in two laps in the Obertrumer See, starting at the Strandbad Obertrum with a short landing between the two 750-metre loops, before a run of around 350 metres leads into transition. From there the bike course sets the tone of the day.
The 41.8-kilometre bike loop is ridden twice and, despite the lakeland setting, is anything but flat: close to 780 metres of climbing are spread across several short, sharp ascents rather than one long mountain — each lap a roughly two-kilometre climb at about four percent, a shorter, steeper pitch touching eleven percent, and near the end of the lap two very short kickers with spikes above 20 percent. Because the lap comes twice, every climb adds up.
The closing ten-kilometre run follows the lakeshore over two laps and still brings around 130 rolling metres of its own — no real climbs, but a constant gentle up and down that unsettles the rhythm on tired bike legs. Over the whole day this adds up to a good 900 metres of climbing. The Trumer Triathlon is known for its course in the hilly lake district and the atmosphere along the route.
Pacing Strategy
Across the three disciplines the decision lies not in a single passage but in how evenly you meter out the rolling bike kilometres. Swim controlled and come out of the water without going into the red, because the real rhythm work starts on the bike. There only a fifth of the course is flat — keep your power capped on the two longer climbs per lap and take the short, biting kickers with momentum rather than force.
The decisive phase is the second bike lap: everything invested too eagerly on the first costs you here and on the run that follows. On the ten rolling run kilometres the trap is the fresh feeling straight out of transition — the legs are heavy and deceptive, and your true pace only arrives after a kilometre or two.
Ride the bike with discipline and stay even over the run undulations rather than overcooking uphill, and you gain more here than with attacks.
12-Week Preparation
For the Olympic distance in Obertrum, expect roughly two and a quarter to three hours of racing depending on your level. The load is mostly aerobic, but on the bike it is more rolling and surgy than on a flat course: the recurring climbs push you briefly over threshold again and again, with rolling recovery on the descents in between. Try to hold one constant pace and you either drop on the ramps or overcook it and pay on the run.
Decisive are the two longer climbs per bike lap together with the steep kickers near the end of the lap, and the transition to running, when the legs have to be ready to run after the second pass. The following ten rolling run kilometres then still demand an even rhythm.
Training should therefore centre on repeated short, hard intervals in the threshold and VO2max range (roughly 30 seconds to three minutes) on real climbs, off a solid aerobic base. Brick runs straight after rolling rides prepare the legs for the hilly run, and open-water practice with sighting rehearses the two-lap swim start with its short landing. A full simulation of the bike distance plus the run at least once in preparation gives you the confidence to pace race day correctly.
