Course & Elevation
After the opening in cold, clear water, transition leads straight onto the gravel lap of the Tiroler Zugspitz Arena, ridden twice in the sprint. Each lap holds two defining tests: a climb of a good two kilometres with around 140 metres of gain and ramps up to 15 percent, and a shorter, steeper ramp of a good 90 metres at almost eight percent average. Between them the course rolls over forest and farm tracks where the loose surface is the real extra currency.
The closing run of around six kilometres inverts the character instead: a flat trail loop on natural ground around the Heiterwanger See whose entire relief is 28 metres and which holds only one short rise, at kilometre 3.2. Of the race's good 650 metres of climbing, around 612 fall on the bike and only about 53 on the run. That makes the sprint the shortest edition of this alpine format — not a defused one, but one whose difficulty clearly sits in the saddle.
Pacing Strategy
A sprint invites full throttle, but this course punishes it twice over: the two climbs per lap come four times in all, and anyone who climbs the first two above threshold rides the last two in survival mode. Place your hard efforts deliberately — on the 15-percent section, traction and a smooth pedal stroke count for more than a watt record, because on gravel, whoever mashes out of the saddle spins out.
The race is decided on the second bike lap and the transition into the run: after four climbs, the first minutes of running on flat natural ground reveal whether your legs are still with you, with no gradient to cap the pace for you. The trap is the surface on the descents — on loose gravel, over-braking costs time and confidence at once. Ride the descents fluidly and you gain more than the climbs have to offer.
12-Week Preparation
For this sprint distance, budget roughly 1:30 to 2:15 hours depending on your level — noticeably more than on a flat sprint course, because the climbing and the surface take their share.
The demand is markedly variable: short, intense climbing blocks above threshold, technical gravel descents offering incomplete recovery, and a flat but fast run on pre-loaded legs. Decisive are the four bike climbs and your handling confidence on loose ground.
Train hill intervals of three to eight minutes near race intensity, ideally on gravel with the bike you will actually race, plus descending technique on loose surfaces and brick runs from the bike onto flat natural ground. A handful of open-water sessions in cool water completes the preparation — mountain lakes stay far colder than the pool, even in summer.
